Henry begins his speech with a determined tone. He uses short and clear sentences to firmly declare his position on the issue regarding America’s independence. In the middle of the paragraph, Henry uses a serious tone, and in the last part of the passage, he uses an urgent tone to show that the action needs to be taken immediately. Henry uses allusion by referring to the bible. For example, Henry says, “Suffer not yourselves to be betrayed with a kiss”. This refers to Judas’ betrayal of Jesus in the bible. Moreover, he says, “Are we disposed to be of the number of those who, having eyes, see not, and having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation?”. This refers to the bible where it talks about blind and deaf people. After the introduction, Henry introduces tension by mentioning the president. Henry indirectly criticizes the president by saying that people are not understanding the significance of the situation. Henry anticipates argument, since he says, “they tell us, sir, that we are weak”. This shows that Henry is acknowledging the opposing side, though he refutes it by we have to gather strength.
