Artificial Knee Joints are Not Only Applicable to Elders

The knee joint belongs to a body part that has a lot of movement. As such, aging begins quickly and is likely to lead to knee disease.

In particular, if damaged knee cartilage is left unattended for a long time, it often worsens to degenerative arthritis, so it is easy to find people who go to the hospital in search of related names.

In fact, knee degenerative arthritis causes extreme pain and degrades the quality of life. Therefore, considering a healthy retirement life, it is recommended to deal with degenerative arthritis early. According to a survey, about 40 percent of patients with knee degenerative arthritis are under the age of 60. Four out of 10 patients can be seen as young age.

Sangbum Kim "Knee degenerative arthritis is a disease that causes bone collisions as knee cartilage is gradually damaged," said Jamsil Athletes' Village Hospital. "As a result, symptoms such as pain, inflammation, and edema appear on the knee and leg shape may be deformed, so if abnormal symptoms persist, it is recommended to be examined accurately."

"Patients in the early and middle stages of knee degenerative arthritis can generally expect to improve through non-surgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy, and injection therapy," he added. "Patients in the late stages of degenerative arthritis, which have very severe symptoms, are difficult to improve only with non-surgical treatment, and in this case, surgery is considered to insert an artificial joint into the knee.

Knee artificial joint surgery removes all remaining cartilage at the end of the knee bone and then replaces only a part of the damaged joint or the entire joint depending on the patient's individual condition. If the knee cartilage is not severely damaged, knee osteotomy, which straightens the bent leg instead of knee artificial joint insertion surgery, is also considered.

Director Sangbum Kim said, "After knee artificial joint surgery, we need to go through a systematic rehabilitation process to restore walking ability and improve the movement of knee joints," adding, "If steady rehabilitation and management are carried out, we can enjoy a healthy daily life without knee pain and do enough light exercise." In particular, if the lifestyle that puts pressure on the knee joint is improved, the lifespan of the artificial joint can be further increased," he advised.
