The lift suddenly stopped this afternoon at the Alpensia Resort ski resort in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do.
The accident left more than 50 passengers, including children, shivering in the cold for more than three hours in the air dozens of meters. According to an analysis by the Korea Meteorological Administration, the wind chill temperature at the site was minus 18 degrees.
The ski resort lift, which stopped at a height of about 10 meters, was seen wrapping itself up with cold weather supplies to prevent body temperature from falling.
A little later, the rescue team arrived and tied the passengers with ropes from the lift to rescue them one after another. At around 4:10 p.m. December 20th, the lift that was operating at the Alpensia Resort ski resort in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do suddenly stopped.
The accident left about 50 passengers stranded in the air for up to three and a half hours and shivering with cold and fear. It is reported that the accident information was not properly made.
The prevailing opinion is that the coldest time was the pain, and it was very difficult to wait because the situation was not properly guided when this should be. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the temperature in the area was close to minus 10 degrees at the time of the accident.
Moreover, the actual wind temperature fell to around minus 18 degrees Celsius as strong winds blew around the site. Three passengers complained of hypothermia and were taken to a hospital.
The resort is investigating the exact cause of the accident while restoring the lift. Police have launched an investigation into resort officials on why the lift suddenly stopped and whether it was defective.
