The fatality rate of COVID-19 reinfected patients is nearly 80% higher than that of the first infected person, according to a survey by the quarantine authorities. Authorities stressed the need to be vaccinated even if it has infectious power in the past.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters on the 18th, according to an analysis of the fatality rate by number of infections on 8,472,714 confirmed patients since July 24, 2022, when the Omicron BA.5 mutation became dominant, the age standardized fatality rate was 0.11% for two infections. This is 1.79 times the fatality rate of 0.06% per infection.
The number of re-infected people has been steadily increasing in recent years. It is estimated that one out of five confirmed patients is a re-infected person. The estimated rate of re-infection cases in the first week of January (1~7th) was 19.92%, higher than 19.02% in the previous week.
The Central Disease Control Headquarters said, "The proportion of re-infected people is increasing during the Omicron dominant period, and the risk of death is also high in case of re-infection and severe progression," adding, "Even if vaccination is infectious in the past, vaccination is needed in time for recommended vaccination."
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters' analysis of 1,318,469 confirmed patients from November 13 to December 10 last year, the risk of severe progression decreased by 93.9% compared to those who were not vaccinated even if they were confirmed after the second vaccination.
The severity rate of the unvaccinated confirmed group was 16.3 times higher than that of the confirmed group after the second vaccination and 7.0 times higher than that of the confirmed group after the fourth vaccination.
