How to Socially Engage Senior Citizens

Jeju Island looks like a young city because many young people from the land are visiting. However, recently, the island has entered a super-aged society (20% of the elderly) as of the end of last year. With not enough welfare facilities for the elderly, senior citizen centers, which have strengthened their public role in Jeju Island, are becoming the front-line welfare facilities for the elderly.

Jeju Senior Citizens Hall is transforming into a specialized operation. At the senior citizen center in Wimi 1-ri, Namwon-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju, which was visited at the end of the afternoon on June 27, a cooking class "Healthy Table" was in full swing for the elderly.

The cooking instructor was making dishes using green onions and beef, such as introducing the efficacy of green onions and allowing the elderly to slice beef.

The "Health Meal" specialized in this senior citizen center is a customized program for the elderly who are in a state of nutritional imbalance due to skipping meals or simple meals. It is designed to allow the elderly to experience nutritious table cooking while cooking themselves and to re-recognize the importance of eating in old age.

The appearance of the elderly men participating in the cooking class was serious.

Hyun Sang-guk (79) said, "Although not many people can gather due to COVID-19, I am used to holding chopping boards and knives, and cooking classes are becoming a window for acquiring information on tables that are medicinal," adding, "Information on healthy tea ahead of cooking classes is also easy to hear."

In addition to the cooking class, programs such as silver health gymnastics, camellia dance, sports dance, and boccia were operated at the senior citizen center, which has 326 members, leading the lack of program diversity and the transformation of senior citizens who are not visited by young seniors.

It is a good way for society to step up and increase the social activities of the elderly and induce the elderly to move their bodies more, and it is something to emulate elsewhere. We need to create a society that can protect the health of the elderly.
