Personal Reflection on School Motive

My high school's motive is “more than a school, we are a family More than a teacher, you are a shepherd. More than a student, you are a disciple”. If I have to choose a single keyword from this whole motive, I believe it’s the community. We regard each other as a family because we have a community that is filled with love, trust, and integrity—I personally believe that the three key factors that allow us to have such a community are thankfulness, a sense of ownership, and obedience.

When I first came to the high school, the most recognizable difference of students is that they always share thankfulness. Not just do they say with their mouth, but they act according to their words. I was mesmerized by their attitude even in difficult situations. I realized that thankfulness is not the thing that comes out because of the situation, but thankfulness is my behavior, my perspective of seeing the world. Because of such an idea, I began to understand that thankfulness helps people to live positively. In a community where lots of different people live, there can be conflicts no matter what kind of community I am in. However, such conflict can be easily solved, or even not reach a condition of conflict if we all try to keep our hearts positive and thankful to the situation and each other. Moreover, I realized that such a perspective also helps me to find positive sides of other people; for example, when I was in CSL, I had a friend who was difficult to get along with. However, after I began to share thankfulness about that friend with my roommates, I began to see the positive sides of her. Now, we consider each other as one of our best friends.

Another aspect that helps form a positive and supportive community is a sense of ownership. The sense of ownership means considering the community as if I am the owner. When I was in middle school, I thought everyone has their own position, and it’s fine to just focus on each one’s position. This means that if I am not the leader, then there’s no reason for me to further consider the problem of the community. However, in here, I realized that it’s important for followers to not just support leaders but think as if they are in charge of the whole community. In this way, I was able to consider the problem of the community as my problem. Thus, I was able to be aware of the community’s problem, think about different plausible solutions and engage myself in solving such problems. When every member of the community has this perspective, then the community begins to run in a supportive and collaborative manner.

Obedience is another important aspect of forming a supportive community. The first one is obedience to God, which is loving each other. He said “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me’. When this message comes true in our life, the community becomes supportive and people become considerate. The second one is obedience to teachers, for teachers always try to guide us and teach us in the right direction. I remember Mr. Seong’s JG message, which was about how the teacher is like a guideline in the swimming pool so that we don’t cross the line, unlike the society where nothing exists to keep us from dangers and worldly values. The third one is obedience to the rule. While teachers make rules, we also make rules. These rules are not just a method to keep the community in order but to help individuals.
