Reason for Otolithiasis

Otolithiasis is a disease caused by the fall of biceps in the semicircular duct, one of the equilibrium organs. The exact name is Benign paroxymal positional vertigo (BPPV), which experiences rotational dizziness caused by the movement of the head.

Located around the semicircular tube, otolith is a small substance that makes you feel a change in gravity, and when you come out of your original position, you feel severe dizziness when you move your head. The exact cause of the biceps falling off is unknown, but it can be trauma, head shock, surgery, virus infection, or blood circulation disorder if you lie down for a long time.


otolithiasis is fine when you wake up in the morning, turn or tilt your head, lie down or get up, and feel dizzy for about a minute or two depending on your specific posture, and if you stay still. It can also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and cold sweat, and symptoms may decrease or disappear after a week or two. However, one in two to three people may recur after one to two months.


As a treatment method, physical therapy is performed to return the otolith to its original position. Appropriate physical therapy can be performed depending on the left or right ear and which anticyclone is otolithiasis. If there is no response once, repeat it several times. Fortunately, many patients often improve on their own without treatment, but treatment can improve symptoms faster, so it is better to treat them early.


otolithiasis does not cause complications, but you should be careful because there is a risk of trauma due to falling because you cannot balance it. There is no special precaution, but suddenly it is better to avoid the position of the head.
