Romanticism and Transcendentalism

Romanticism mainly focuses on the freedom of expressing individual emotions, feelings, and senses. For example, the story “Cask of Amontillado” focuses on the Amontillado’s will to kill Fernando based on his emotion of hatred and abomination. “The Raven” also focuses on the emotion, where the main character goes insane by reminiscing his lovers. The narrator says her emotional state to the raven to express his longing, such as “Clasp a rare and radiant maiden”.On the other hand, transcendentalism has a central focus on the power of individual knowledge and thought to transcend intellectual growth, instead of following the established norm. In the story “self- reliance”, the author talks about following their individual will instead of conforming to social expectations. It says “imitation is suicide” and “believe that what is true for you in your private heart”. Additionally, romanticism portrays a strong contrast, such as life or death, and sanity or madness in “The Raven. There was a contrast of evil or goodness in the “Cask of Amontillado”. Transcendentalism focuses on nature and humans without a strong contrast. In “Nature”, the author mainly praises nature and says we shouldn’t take nature for granted. For example, the author claims that “nature never wears a mean appearance”.
