According to a recent survey of teenagers, more than 20% answered "plastic surgery" when asked what they wanted to do during summer vacation. It can be seen that not a few teenagers, as well as teenagers who dream of becoming celebrities, are worried about their appearance. In fact, the number of plastic surgery cases for teenagers is also steadily increasing.
However, according to plastic surgeons, excessive plastic surgery in adolescence can be harmful. Regarding this, Hong Jong-wook, director of the medical doctor's office (Semin Plastic Surgery), said, "For women, the body structure is established to some extent around the age of 13 and for men around the age of 18, but it is not desirable to perform plastic surgery in the process of growth."
Since adolescence is a period of continuous growth, it is recommended to avoid surgery to damage tissues, such as cutting skin or cutting bones, and once a scar occurs, it can interfere with the growing skin. In particular, plastic surgery at a young age can change differently from the time of surgery as the skeleton grows, and it is difficult to predict the results, which can cause many emotional problems.
Hospitals are also responsible for the increase in plastic surgery for adolescents. Recently, some hospitals are encouraging surgery to bring student ID cards or introduce friends. Some hospitals even do surgery and turn a blind eye to bad results. Considering that it can cause extreme mental stress to adolescents, such as interpersonal avoidance or loss of self-esteem, it is necessary to conduct careful diagnosis and surgery at the hospital.
In addition, some teenagers choose illegal plastic surgery rather than professional medical institutions because they cannot afford expensive surgery costs. This stems from the tendency to think that injection therapy such as fillers, Botox, and fat transplants do not need to be treated by a plastic surgeon. In response, Director Hong said, "Illegal drugs remain in the body as the surface of the skin becomes uneven when injected."
"Some hospitals mix domestic or U.S. products with cheap Chinese ingredients and leave up to 10 times the margin, so it is better to check the original product at a professional medical institution and get a procedure," Hong said. "If you want to do plastic surgery in adolescence, it can be helpful to use fillers or Botox procedures to minimize side effects."
