Undernourished Children

It is expected that the government will be able to check the current status of the "Food Support Project for fasting children," which was centered on local governments, and subsidize part of the unit price to local governments. Through this, it is expected that the deviation of the unit price of meal support by local governments will be reduced to some extent.

Representative Kang Deuk-gu (Democratic Party of Korea) said on the 13th that he/she has proposed a "partial amendment to the Child Welfare Act" that focuses on this content.

Currently, local governments are implementing a "food support project for fasting children" for children from low-income families. However, there are variations in the unit price of meals according to the degree of financial independence and project promotion capabilities of local governments, and gaps are occurring between regions.

In addition, according to the data submitted by Kang Deuk-gu from 17 metropolitan and provincial offices of education nationwide, most of them are eating at convenience stores (41.9%) or marts (16.6%).

The "Partial Amendment to the Child Welfare Act" proposed by Rep. Kang Deuk-gu allows local governments to subsidize part of the amount equivalent to the government's recommended meal unit price, considering the financial independence of local governments. It also stipulates that the Minister of Health and Welfare checks the status of local governments' meal support every year.

Kang Deuk-gu said, "Even if the meal support project has been transferred to local governments, the state is still responsible for inspecting the child meal support project. The state should prepare a legal basis for checking the status of each local government's meal support."
