Though it’s common to see stairs in every building, more people tend to use an escalator or elevator if possible. According to Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), the national public broadcaster of South Korea, more than 60% of people tried using stairs in 2005, but less than 40% are using stairs after 2010. They attributed the prominent reason for people becoming lazy to move their body, and because of the more time required compared to elevators andescalatorsr. Considering this situation, according to John Bellettiere, Professor of Epidemiology at the University of California San Diego Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health, reduced body movement has resulted in increasing chronic diseases and non-communicable diseases, and that it remains necessary to research the relationship between stair usage and body health, for stair exercise stimulates the body movement.
First and foremost, stair climbing improves people’s organs including brain, heart, and lungs. The study result of researchers at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, reveals climbing stairs have a significant impact on brain health. By using magnetic resonance, they scanned the brains of 331 healthy adults between the ages of 19 and 79. At the end of the experiment, the brains of participants who climbed stairs appeared physically younger. Brains of people who had to climb stairs daily dropped by about a year, showing a considerable benefit of climbing stairs. This study's research explicitly proves that climbing stairs can bring a positive impact even though it is a simple activity. Colin A G Boreham et al., PhDs at an institute for Sport and Health in University College Dublin, also agree with the research result and further state that climbing stairs can increase cardiovascular health benefits. Their research result reveals that a group of people who were asked to climb stairs every day displayed a rise in hhigh-densitylipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration, which is aood cholesterol in people’s blood. In essence, a short- term stair- climbing program gives considerable cardiovascular health benefits. Additionally, according to Harvard Health Publishing from Harvard Medical School, stair climbing strengthens the lungs in a short time (). Such a point clearly points out that stair climbing is worthy because it helps people to maintain their physical health in a good way. Therefore, using stairs has positive impacts on people’s physical health.
