I give breath to the final high note, A flat—and feel the goosebump with the rush of thrill. I see the audience clapping, and I bow. When the curtain closes, I take my members back to the room and clean the flute in the same manner I play on stage: with the dedication and sophistication that my hand remembers.
More than the sound from the instrument, what I aspire for is communication, the emotional rapport that I’m in charge of. Whether it’s at a regional theater, school stage, or small corner in the nursing home, I seek to convey my utmost by building up steadily from an unshakable foundation. From cleaning off single dust on the flute to reviewing the concept of linear function before calculus or practicing putting on personal protective equipment (PPE) quickly before handing out medical supplies, I pursue to do the same in all facets of my life because everything I build up adds to my ability to communicate with the world.
The sound of the clean, dustless flute once again resonates in the hall. Though an old man’s facial expression is hidden behind his deep wrinkle, I saw a tear glittering under the strong stage light. At that moment, I knew that I was successful in my "communication" with him, through music.
